MAKE YOUR OWN COMPOST
The fist step to get better at gardening is to prep your soil. Adding compost ot your soil is is really great option. It is a great alternative for chemical fertilizers which can harm the enviorment. So, let's take a look at how to make compost.
1. Choose a Compost Bin or Pile
-
Bin: Use a plastic, wood, or metal compost bin with good airflow.
-
Pile: If you have outdoor space, just choose a corner of your yard.
-
Location: Pick a shady, well-drained spot.
2. What to add:
✔️ Greens (Nitrogen-rich):
-
Fruit and vegetable scraps
-
Coffee grounds and filters
-
Tea bags (no plastic)
-
Fresh grass clippings
✔️ Browns (Carbon-rich):
-
Dry leaves
-
Shredded newspaper or cardboard
-
Sawdust (untreated wood)
-
Egg cartons (plain cardboard)
❌ Avoid:
-
Meat, dairy, or oily foods
-
Pet waste
-
Diseased plants
-
Plastic or synthetic materials
3. Build Your Pile in Layers
-
Alternate greens and browns.
-
Keep a roughly 1:2 ratio (1 part green to 2 parts brown).
-
Chop or shred materials to help them break down faster.
4. Maintain Moisture
-
Compost should feel like a soaked sponge.
-
Add water or dry browns to balance moisture.
5. Turn the Pile
-
Stir or turn your compost every 1–2 weeks to add oxygen.
-
This speeds up decomposition and prevents odor.
6. Wait and Harvest
-
Compost is ready in 1-2 months.
-
It should be dark, crumbly, and smell earthy.
-
Use it in your garden beds, pots, etc.
🌱 Composting at home not only reduces household waste but also enriches your garden naturally. With just a little effort and the right balance of ingredients, you can turn everyday scraps into black gold for your plants.
