WORLD OCEANS DAY
WORLD OCEANS DAY
When is it celebrated and why?
World ocean day is celebrated on 8th June every year as a global initiative to raise awareness about the oceans importance and encourage sustanaible management. It's a day to celebrate the ocean, understand its role in our lives and ecosystems, and promote actions to protect it.
Why do we need to save the ocean?
If we do not put contribution into saving the oceans, we would not be able to do our daily activities. Plastic would fill the oceans, turning into a hazard for all marine life. It takes fruit and vegetable peels only a few weeks to disintegrate, while it takes plastic and aluminium producst more than 3 centuries to disintegrate completely into debris. This shows that it is neccessary to contribute in saving the oceans.
How can we save the oceans?
To protect our oceans, individuals can take several actions--
- Minimize single-use plastics: Use reusable bags, bottles, and straws instead of disposable ones.
- Minimize single-use plastics: Use reusable bags, bottles, and straws instead of disposable ones.
- Properly dispose of plastic: Recycle effectively and hold onto plastic until you can find a recycling bin.
- Avoid products that harm the ocean: Look for alternatives to plastic packaging and products that contain harmful chemicals.
- Support sustainable fisheries: Choose seafood that is caught or farmed in a way that is environmentally friendly.
- Be aware of overfishing: Reduce your consumption of overfished species.
- Reduce water usage:Use water efficiently to decrease the amount of wastewater that flows into the ocean.
- Dispose of chemicals properly:Avoid releasing pollutants like herbicides, pesticides, and cleaning products into waterways.
- Lower your carbon emissions: Choose energy-efficient appliances and reduce your reliance on fossil fuels.
- Reduce your travel: Consider using public transportation or carpooling.
- Participate in beach cleanups: Actively remove trash from beaches and waterways.
- Support ocean conservation organizations: Donate to and volunteer with organizations that work to protect the oceans.
- Educate yourself and others: Learn about ocean conservation and share your knowledge with others.
- Advocate for policy changes: Support policies that protect the ocean and marine life.
- Practice safe boating: Anchor in sandy areas away from coral and seagrass.
- Respect marine habitats: Be mindful of your impact on marine ecosystems.
- Use reef-safe sunscreen: Choose sunscreen that doesn't contain chemicals harmful to coral reefs.
Support sustainable tourism: Choose tour operators that prioritize environmental protection.
The following points are ways in which we can contribute to saving the ocean.
