To address this hidden crisis, World Food Safety Day is observed annually on June 7. Jointly led by the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), the 2026 campaign targets this exact challenge under the urgent theme: "From burden to solutions – safe food everywhere."

Food safety is rarely front-page news until an outbreak occurs, yet the daily toll is staggering. According to updated global health statistics, contaminated food causes an estimated 866 million illnesses and 1.52 million deaths globally every year.
The tragedy of unsafe food is that it disproportionately targets the most vulnerable.
Children under five years old carry 40% of the foodborne disease burden, resulting in 125,000 preventable deaths each year. Beyond the profound human suffering, unsafe food acts as a major roadblock to economic development. It strains healthcare infrastructure, leads to massive medical bills, cripples local tourism, and triggers severe food waste at a time when global hunger is a pressing concern.
