Sarojini Naidu – The Nightingale of India

Sarojini Naidu was one of India’s most remarkable freedom fighters, poets, and political leaders. She is fondly known as the “Nightingale of India” because of her beautiful poetry and her powerful voice that inspired millions during India’s struggle for independence.

Sarojini Naidu was born on February 13, 1879, in Hyderabad, India. She was a very intelligent and talented child. Her father, Aghorenath Chattopadhyay, was a scientist and educationist, and her mother, Varada Sundari Devi, was a poet. Sarojini showed great interest in literature and began writing poems at a very young age. She was sent to England for higher studies, where she studied at King’s College, London, and later at Girton College, Cambridge.

Sarojini Naidu gained recognition as a poet because her poems beautifully described Indian culture, nature, and emotions. Some of her famous poetry collections include The Golden Threshold, The Bird of Time, and The Broken Wing. Her poetic style was musical and expressive, which earned her the title “Nightingale of India "
