8 February is annually celebrated as National Science Day in India, commemorating the discovery of 'Raman Effect' by Sir C. V. Raman in 1928. He was also awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics for the discovery in 1930. The National Council for Science and Technology Communication (NCSTC) requested the then Government of India in 1986 to designate 28 February as the National Science Day. The proposal was accepted and the day has been declared National Science Day since then. Every year a different theme is selected for the event.
