🌍 Greenwashing: How Brands Trick You Into Thinking They’re Eco-Friendly
-Ranvitha E 9B
Today, many people care about the environment. They want to buy products that are safe for the planet. Because of this, many companies say their products are “green” or “eco-friendly.” But sometimes, this is not true. When companies lie or exaggerate about being good for the planet, it is called greenwashing.
Greenwashing means a brand pretends to be environmentally friendly just to look good and make more money. They use words like “natural,” “organic,” or “clean,” even when their product is not actually good for the environment.
Sometimes brands use green colours, leaves, or pictures of nature on their packaging. This makes people think the product is safe for the planet, even when it is not. Some companies also make small changes and advertise them as big improvements. For example, a company might reduce plastic by only 2% but claim they are “saving the planet.”
Greenwashing is a serious problem because it tricks customers. People buy these products thinking they are helping the Earth, but the environment continues to get harmed. It also takes attention away from companies that are genuinely trying to protect the planet.
So how can we avoid greenwashing?? We should read labels carefully and check for real certifications. We should also look for clear information, not just pretty words or pictures. If a brand cannot explain how their product helps the environment, it may not be truly eco-friendly.
In the end, greenwashing shows that not everything that looks “green” is actually green. By being smart and careful, we can make better choices that really help our planet.
