Paper Bag Day: Turning Paper Waste Into Something Refreshing
Every year, Paper Bag Day encourages us to reflect on the importance of reducing waste and choosing eco-friendly alternatives. This year, students are taking that spirit a step further by transforming discarded newspapers into something beautifully useful — natural, handmade air fresheners.
Using nothing more than old newspaper, water, and natural scents, students will explore the art of paper mâché, a craft that blends creativity with sustainability. The activity begins by tearing and soaking newspaper strips, then blending them into a smooth pulp. This pulp becomes the base for shaping unique air-freshener designs — from small bowls and pebbles to decorative shapes that can be placed on desks, window sills, or lockers.
Once molded, students infuse their creations with fragrant oils or natural aromas like lavender, citrus, or sandalwood. As the sculptures dry, they transform into charming, eco-friendly fresheners that add a subtle fragrance to any space.
What makes this activity special is not just the crafting itself, but the message behind it. Students learn how reusing waste materials can reduce environmental impact. They discover that sustainable living doesn’t always require big actions — sometimes, it starts with a simple piece of old newspaper and a creative spark.
By the end of the activity, each student walks away with a handmade, biodegradable air freshener and a stronger understanding of how everyday waste can be reinvented into something refreshing and meaningful.
