Guru Nanak Jayanti, also known as Gurpurab, is one of the most sacred festivals in Sikhism. It marks the birth anniversary of Guru Nanak Dev Ji, the first Guru and founder of the Sikh faith. The festival usually falls in the month of Kartik (October–November) and is celebrated with great devotion and enthusiasm by Sikhs and people of all faiths around the world.
Life and Teachings of Guru Nanak Dev Ji
Guru Nanak Dev Ji was born in 1469 in the village of Talwandi (now Nankana Sahib, Pakistan). From an early age, he showed a deep spiritual inclination and compassion for all living beings. His teachings emphasized the oneness of God, equality of all humans regardless of caste or religion, and the importance of honest living and selfless service. His famous message, “Ik Onkar” (There is One God), forms the foundation of Sikhism.
Guru Nanak travelled extensively across India and beyond to spread his message of peace, love, and unity. He rejected discrimination, ritualism, and superstitions, urging people to live righteous lives guided by truth and humility.
Celebrations and Traditions
The celebrations of Guru Nanak Jayanti begin two days before the main day with the Akhand Path, a continuous 48-hour recitation of the Guru Granth Sahib, the holy scripture of Sikhs. On the eve of the festival, Nagar Kirtans (religious processions) are organized, where devotees sing hymns and display the teachings of Guru Nanak through floats and performances.
On the main day, devotees gather in Gurudwaras to offer prayers, listen to kirtans (devotional songs), and share in the Langar — a community meal served to everyone, symbolizing equality and togetherness. The atmosphere is filled with devotion, humility, and joy.
Significance
Guru Nanak Jayanti is not just a religious celebration but also a reminder of the timeless values of kindness, equality, and truth. It inspires people to follow the path of love and service, and to see the divine presence in all humanity. His teachings remain relevant even today, guiding people toward a more compassionate and harmonious world.
