World Humanitarian Day is observed annually on August 19th. It was established by the United Nations General Assembly in 2008 to honor humanitarian workers who have risked and sacrificed their lives in the course of providing humanitarian aid and to commemorate the 2003 bombing of the Canal Hotel in Baghdad, Iraq, that claimed the lives of 22 humanitarian aid workers, including the UN Special Representative for Iraq, Sergio Vieira de Mello.
